Pt Wells to Matakana Walkway/Cycleway 2010 -16
This walkway /cycleway was planned and built by members of the Matakana Community Group with support from a range of local community trucking, excavating and fencing contractors. Scott MacCallum managed the contract work.
There were five separate sections to the walkway
- Stage one was the building of the walkway through the Rodney District Council wastewater plant property at Jones Road, Omaha. This involved forming a fenced walkway across the peatland and up the face of the hill to the Takatu Road.
- Stage two was a section of walkway built by Council on the road edge from the Council land to the end of Whitmore Road.
- Stage three was the building of the walkway on an easement created by the Whitmore family from Whitmore’s Road to Tongue farm Road. This section required the building of boardwalks across swamp.
- The fourth stage was the purchase of land to create an easement across Tucker land to reach the edge of the Matakana River from Tongue Farm Road, to manage walkway construction and to complete fencing.
- The fifth stage was to arrange for Auckland Transport to build a walkway bridge across the Matakana River
Finance
From 2010 -2014 the local community raised funds, primarily through fun runs, community dinners and through business sponsorship. More than $100,000 was raised towards walkway costs. Rodney Council provided $50,000 and the bridge cost was procured from AT budgets.
Sculpture Trail
The Matakana to Pt Wells walkway has a series of way markers designed by Nick Charlton of Morris and James Pottery and Tileworks. The funding for this project was won by Matakana Community Group from the Auckland Regional Services Trust’s account. The total grant was $72,000
